What the heck is a Wiki?
"Wiki wiki" means quickly in Hawaiian. The idea is the website becomes what it is through user collaboration. Nobody is trying to centrally say what goes on it and what doesn't. Instead those using it put content and use content and monitor it. For example, if I created a page stating that all Lagers should be fermented at -80C, this would be obviously incorrect to most people seeing this content. Rather than emailing a webmaster that the web page is inaccurate, you have the power to change it! That's the power of a Wiki. The content is up to you. Don't complain about content, or suggest content. Put it up. If others disagree they can change it and then you work it out.
What does this do for me and the Worts?
Collaboration: Rather than spread knowledge throughout chains of emails, 'working groups' or 'subcommittees' can put their work online easily. See http://wiki.wort.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/MailingList for an example I started for our mailing list discussions.
Does this replace the mailing list?
NO! This is not intended to affect the mailing list at all. However, it could provide some benefits (which the mailing list committee is discussing).
Example 1: If I wanted to share a large file... I could go as far as uploading it to the wiki and emailing a link out, thus not filling up people's inboxes.
Example 2: Let users on the list know that you are maintaining an area about some topic. For example, minutes from the Wort meetings. Let people know the location of this page so they can subscribe to changes. Then, if you miss a meeting, as soon as the minutes are updated you'll get an email with the changes and a link.
Can we change how it looks? I don't like the color.
- Sure it supports themes etc. In your user preferences you can even choose from several pre-installed themes.
What about the old wiki?
- The contents have been moved to the new wiki.
- The old wiki is still backed up and saved, and can be restored in case people hate this.
Are the bylaws on the wiki?
No, those are not negotiable and are found here http://www.wort.org/bylaws.shtml.
